WELCOME TO ZOO MELAKA

Zoo Melaka is located about 13km from Melaka City. It is the second largest Zoo in the country encompassing 54-acres with more than 1,200 animals of over 200 different species. It is also the first Zoo in the region to exhibit the rare and endangered Sumatran Rhinoceros and Gaur.

The Zoo, is a givernment run institute (since ’79) and currently houses all the animals which have been confiscated from poachers or simply brought in from the wild owing to them being either too injured to re-release or for being to dangerous (ie, scarface – tiger with history of killing a number of people.) These are then taken care of, with many behind the scenes which visitors do not see. Although not an amazing zoo by western standards, is still a reasonable one, by asian standards. It also has a wide range of animals such as exotic birds, rare and endangered species

The Zoo, although underfunded, is attempting to improve conditions within the zoo all the time, and new exhibits are being built all the time. There is also research being done, throughout the zoo, on these animals, their habitats, etc. It has recently been promoted to house a night zoo, which means that you can see all the animals in their natural habitats at night.

One of my favourites used to be the safari like exhibit, which is the biggest in the zoo, and houses a number of species… Tourists and visitors are able to walk through this, via a overhead walkway, which gets you closer to the animals…
